Super Retina on the iPhone X

Is the screen of your iPhone too dark or does it seem dim? With these 5 tips you can adjust the brightness or find out what the brightness problem is.

In iOS 11 , the way you change the (automatic) brightness of the iPhone screen changes. Do you suffer from a dark screen, does the screen seem dim or is the brightness not as you would like? Then you will find a number of tips in this article.

Screen not clear enough?

Sometimes you have trouble reading the screen of the iPhone. You think you need reading glasses, but no: it is not yours. The brightness of the screen is simply not optimal. The light output of the iPhone screens has improved over time, so if you suffer from a screen that looks dim or does not 'flip' when you go from a dark to a bright room, then it has want to dive into the settings, to see if everything is properly adjusted.

In the iPhone 8 and newer, Apple has also applied True Tone screen , where the tint of the screen with the ambient light. This should make the screen more pleasant to read. If you opt for the iPhone X , there is an even better contrast between bright and dark surfaces, making the screen easier to read.
If your screen is not as bright as you would like, we will help you get started with the tips below.

# 1 Set the screen to maximum brightness

Do you have trouble reading the screen because it is too dark? Then you can quickly adjust that with a swipe:
  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring out the Control Panel.
  2. Swipe the slider to raise the screen illumination.

# 2 Turn on automatic screen brightness

Also in iOS 11 it is still possible to adjust the screen brightness automatically. It is only in a different place. Previously you had to be here: Settings> Display and brightness> Adjust automatically .
In iOS 11 and later, this setting has been moved:
  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Go to General> Accessibility> Custom view .
  3. Turn the switch on Adjust automatically .

# 3 Find a place with lots of light

Another idea is to go to a place with direct sunlight or indoors under bright lights. This activates the light sensor of the iPhone and the brightness should automatically increase. Of course you have to have the automatic adjustment of the brightness switched on. For example, on iPhone 7, you get a brightness of 705 cd / m2 (nits), an impressive value.
# 4 Turning off
the dimming function Many iCulture readers now know the trick to extra dimming the iPhone screen . You can activate this by pressing the home button three times. Maybe you accidentally turned this function on and you forgot that it was still active. Switch it off by pressing the home button three times

# 5 Reduce white point

Also check whether Reduce white point is switched on. If that is the case, then the screen may appear darker than it really should be. To do this go to Settings> General> Accessibility> Custom display .
If Vreminder is set to white point and the slider is set to 50% or lower, the screen may appear very dark. Switch it off if you do not need it.

# 6 Reset settings

Not always the most favorite solution, but the most thorough one: resetting all settings. To do this go to Settings> General> Reset> Reset all settings . This solution is also recommended by Apple Support. The iPhone restarts and now has the correct brightness settings. You have to go to other functions, to adjust the settings to your own preferences.

Still having problems?

Have the above options not helped and is the screen still dimmed? Then there can be a hardware defect. It's time to go to the Apple Store, especially if the colors look a bit washed out. A yellow tint is not a reason for new iPhones to worry about, because it is quite common. It usually disappears after a few days.

If that is not the case or you continue to have problems with the brightness, then go with your iPhone to the Apple Store to have an employee look at it.
