Shortage or iMac parts: long waiting times for repairs and discounts

Apple suffers from a large shortage of parts for iMac screens. To solve the problem, the company offers free repairs with long waiting times, or a discount on a newer model.

iMac repair problem: Apple has no parts

This writes Macrumors , who claims to be in control of an internal document sent to Apple Stores and Apple Service Providers. This specifically concerns the iMac from 2014 and early to mid-2015 with a 27-inch Retina 5k display.
If one of these iMacs has a problem with the screen, Apple can not fix it for the time being. Only half December, the necessary parts are in stock again to carry out the repair. The reason for this shortage is unknown.
To meet customers, Apple proposes two alternatives. First, the screen repair is completely free for people who are willing to wait until mid-December. Apple emphasizes that staff have to look critically to see if the problem can be solved easily.
iMacs with much more damage, for example with a curved housing or immersed in water can not make use of this free repair. This is therefore specifically the screen.

$ 600 off a new iMac

If you do not want that, you get a $ 600 discount on a newer iMac. That translates to 518 euros, although it is not certain how high the discount in Europe is. If you choose the last option, you have to return the old iMac to Apple to exchange it for the newer model.
The document states that this new procedure must be followed by all Apple Stores and Apple-based service providers worldwide, until the parts are back in stock.

If you are eligible for this special program from Apple, then we recommend contacting the nearest Service Provider. How that works, you can read in the tip below.
