You will not have missed it: Google organized a media event this evening where various new products were announced, including the new Google Pixel 3 smartphone, the Pixel Slate tablet and the Google Home Hub, a kind of speaker for the kitchen. Most of those products are not available in the Netherlands, but there is one that you can buy right away: the new Google Chromecast third generation. It was not mentioned on stage, but is now available in the Netherlands.

You connect the accessory to the television with a short HDMI cable and there is a micro-USB connection. However, the magnet in the HDMI plug has disappeared and the disc has become slightly thicker.

The Chromecast does not yet have its own TV interface and is therefore only suitable for streaming content from your smartphone. Also, the new model does not support 4K, because that only works on the Chromecast Ultra from 2016. The Chromecast Audio and Ultra remain on the market.
There were rumors that Google wanted to release a Chromecast with Bluetooth, but that is not the case. There were also rumors about more powerful Wi-Fi, but that is not mentioned in the specifications on the Google site. Behind the scenes, Google may have worked on it. There were also rumors about an Apple TV- stick with remote control, as an alternative to the Apple TV . But there is no trace of that either now.
So much has remained the same with the 'normal' Chromecast. The same goes for the price: it is 39 euros in the Google Store and undoubtedly also at MediaMarkt and other stores.
Chromecast third generation now officially
Three years ago, Google last released a new Chromecast and now it's time for an update. The third generation Chomecast has a new look and exchanges the shiny design for matte black or matte white. Instead of the Chrome logo there is now a G on it. There are also some small technical improvements internally.Chromecast 2018: also for multiroom audio
The new Chromecast is 15 percent faster and now supports streaming at 60 frames per second when you're watching a 1080p quality. Previously that was 720p. You can also use the new Chromecast as a Chromecast Audio, so you can stream music from your speakers. That function will only be available later this year via a software update.
