Screen shots on iPhone and iPad
Sometimes you want to explain something to someone or show that you have found a bug in digital technology iOS . In such a case it helps to make a screen film, so that others can see and follow exactly all the steps. With the screen capture function this is very easy to do and it is often clearer than a normal screenshot ! Below we explain how the function Screen Capture works, which you will find on your device since iOS 11 .
Previously you had to use third-party apps for screen shots or connect your iPhone to a Mac to create a screen movie via QuickTime. You do not have to do that anymore, but you will first have to add the required button for screenshots to the Control Panel. All your videos are automatically saved in the Photos app, where you can use filters and other editing tools to enrich the screen shots.
Preparation: Add screen shots to your Control Panel
Before you can start, the function must be visible on your device. For this you need to be in the renewed Control Panel :
- Go to Settings> Control panel> Adjust controllers .
- Make sure Screen Capture is turned on. Tap the green button if it is not already the case. This feature has not yet been translated into Dutch in the beta.
- Check whether the function is present by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.
Create screen capture on iPhone or iPad
To make a screen shot, proceed as follows:
- Swipe the Control Panel and tap the Screen Capture button .
- The button turns red and the recording has begun.
- Go to the app of which you want to take a screen shot and perform the desired activities. A red bar at the top of the screen makes it clear that a screen shot is in progress. This bar can also be seen in the final video. With the iPhone X family, only the top left time is lit red.
- When you're done, go back to the Control Panel and switch your Screen Capture off again. The video is automatically saved in your camera roll. You can crop and edit it if necessary.
Make screen shots with sound
You can also opt for a screen shot with sound. To do this, you have to press the Screen Capture button a bit harder to see more options.
- Press the Screen Capture button a little harder, so that the screen below appears.
- Tap the microphone at the bottom of the screen to turn it on. You now make a screen shot with sound, so that you can say an explanation for example.
Stop screen recording
There are several ways to stop screen capture:
- Tap the blue status bar at the top of the screen. A pop-up will appear with which you can stop recording.
- Swipe up to display the Control Panel again. You can tap the button or use 3D Touch to bring out the extra buttons and stop the recording, but this is actually an unnecessary extra step.
Edit screenshots
All screen shots you make are saved in the camera roll. Go to the camera roll, open the desired video and tap the button at the bottom of the screen to edit. You can now cut the video shorter with the standard editing tools, but you can also go to iMovie to combine several clips, for example. You can also view the video by tapping the play button at the bottom of the screen. The video can then be shared on social media, e-mail and in other ways.
Screen capture and privacy
Several iCulture readers have informed us that they are worried about the screen capture feature. This makes it possible to record a FaceTime conversation or Snap with someone unnoticed. This could involve privacy problems.
Remember, however, that it has been possible to film FaceTime conversations for a long time and to take pictures of Snaps, for example by filming a second camera over someone's shoulder. You can never avoid this 100%, although Screen Capture makes it a lot easier.
