Broken Lightning cable: what to do?
digital technology To take the test, we went to the Apple Store with a bunch of broken Lightning cables. As you can see they were pretty broken. If the rubber coating of the cables is torn once, it will go very fast, especially if you also regularly 'pick' on the Lightning cables. The underlying protection of textiles becomes visible and if that is worn off you see the power wires.
Dangerous? The risk of a shock does not immediately yield, because the current intensity is too low for that. If you still have concerns, you can wrap them with electricity tape or a shrink tube.
Will your iPhone no longer work ? It may be on the cable, but there are other possible causes. Check our tips to solve it:

Warranty on cables at Apple
We were not able to exchange all broken Lighting cables on the photo. The Genius Bar employee who helped us checked with his colleagues about the official policy regarding the iPhone warranty and that means that the cable should not be too damaged. At the first sign of a tear or bump in the rubber sheath, it is best to go straight to the Apple Store.
What you need to bring?
- The broken cable.
- The serial number of your device (it must still be within the warranty period).
The employee who helped us explained the official policy of the Apple Store regarding cables. The broken cables the employee takes on are once again checked by an external party after receipt, and the correct criteria are checked. It is quite possible that you will encounter a lenient employee who is keeping an eye shut, but it is obviously the intention that they all use the same procedure.
How is the iPhone warranty arranged at Apple? Does the iPhone guarantee also apply abroad? Is AppleCare anything other than a standard warranty? In short: you can read all about the warranty on your iPhone here.
Solutions: shrinkable stockings and duct tape
We occasionally write about 'indestructible' cables such as the Spring cable and solutions for repairing a ragged cable, such as the
iCordRX (no longer available). But there is a cheaper solution, which is favorite with some iCulture readers: shrink stockings. We ordered a box in different sizes , but we did not think that was an ideal solution.

The idea is that you put the heat shrink around the cable and then shrink it with a hair dryer or other heat source. For that you have to take a rather large size shrink tubing, because the thickening of the connector must fit through. The result was actually not beautiful: it was not in all places nicely tight and it went over time again shift. Maybe it works well with others, but we did not find the solution good enough. The colors also give it a messy appearance.
Also not beautiful, but cheap and perhaps just as effective is the use of electricity tape or duct tape (or as some people say: duck tape), that you can wrap around it much more tightly. You can also buy all kinds of specialized products, such as the aforementioned iCordRx.
They are relatively expensive (three for a tenner), but that is still cheaper than a new cable. You can also find unofficial chargers and cables on the internet that are sometimes very cheap, but keep in mind that the components are often of lower quality and that the security is less well organized.
"Unofficial chargers and cables can damage the iPhone"
In our section sometimes nice offers for Lightning cables come along, where we prefer for approved (MFi) cables. You will also find an extensive range of Lightning cables at stores such as Coolblue, also from other brands. Our recommendation is the cables that are wrapped with nylon.
'I never have broken cables'
"What do you do with those cables to get them so broken?" An reader asked when we announced on Twitter to go to the Apple Store with our collection of broken cables. A justified question. Some people never have broken cables, while others start to wear out immediately after they have been used. It depends on how often and how tightly you roll up the cables,
how intensively you use them and how often you take them on the road. If you throw the cable carelessly at the bottom of your backpack, they can quickly wear out. While we use our iPhones very economically, we often treat our Lightning cables more roughly. After all, they are not made of glass. But again: the experience can be very different per person
